Try Native Flowers

Believe it or not, there are many plants native to Chicagoland and surrounding areas. Not only does using native flowers increase sustainability, you do your part and contribute to the environment. Many of these native flowers also require less maintenance, as they are built for the climate. 

Starting off, the New England Aster is a great variety that blooms purple-pink, and does not require much water. It is good in the shade, and is loved by bees and butterflies. If you want something for the fall, the Garden Phlox is a great option, as it typically blooms in October, and is a pretty light purple color. If you are looking for a perennial, the Butterfly Weed is a bushy plant that needs to be planted in the sun, but is very drought tolerant, and blooms a beautiful orange flower.

Plants that Attract Wildlife

If you want your property to feel more “alive”, then having an abundance of plants that attract birds, bees, and butterflies can do just that. There are many extremely basic species of plants that do the trick. Lavender plants are heavy on nectar, which bees love, and Verbena varieties are great for attracting butterflies. If you would like to attract hummingbirds to your property, you want to emphasize red and pink varieties, as that is how they find their food. Iris, Petunias, Lilies and even Butterfly Bush are all great options.
